What is Cupping Therapy:

Massage cupping is a modified version of “cupping therapy,” which has been used extensively in Chinese medicine for several thousand years. By creating suction and negative pressure, massage cupping is used to drain excess fluids and toxins; stimulate the peripheral nervous system; bring blood flow to stagnant muscles and skin; and loosen adhesions, connective tissue and stubborn knots in soft tissue.

Fitness Moment

Eldridge LewisWhen you hear the phrase, “Age is only a number” that message hits home when talking about Mr. Eldridge Lewis. At the spry age of 94 years young; you can find Mr. Lewis every morning in the SportsPlex fitness Center working out. Whether it’s on the treadmill, pull-up machine or lifting weights, you will see his tall slender frame adorned in Under Armor gear working out like someone half his age. Very often, you will see members watch him in awe at how intense his workouts are. They are even more impressed and inspired when they learn of his age. Quinton Baker, a fellow Sportsplex member stated “I’m 73 and it amazes me at the amount of time he puts into his workouts. I hope to be that active when I’m 94” When asked what is his secret to staying young? Mr. Lewis replied it’s eating right and exercising daily. The Orange County SportsPlex would like to take this moment to Thank Mr. Eldridge Lewis for being a phenomenal example to all of us…..

A couple of years ago, there was a popular song by Boyz II men called “It’s so hard to say good bye.”  I always liked that song, but I find myself  discovering new meaning in the song as I sit in my office looking at bare walls and packed boxes.  How do I say goodbye to a place that has been my second home for 19 years?   How do I say good bye to members who have become friends and staff that has become family?

The song goes on to say  something about taking memories with you and that is the solace I find as I embark on a new journey as Health and Wellness Director for Cape Fear Country Club in Wilmington.  I have so many wonderful memories- the many, many expansions of the fitness center, staff and members dressing up for Halloween and the incredible generosity of members around the Holidays.  All three of my sons spent time in Kids Corner and got their first jobs here as skate guards and life guards.

The SportsPlex is not only a unique facility because of the combination pool/fitness center/ice rink.  It is unique because of the blend of families, athletes and staff that also consider this their second home.  I am often amazed at the pride and ownership of members and staff.  A piece of my heart will always remain here.

If you walk in my office now, you will see Terrence Warren sitting at my desk.  (Well, he will probably have to get a new desk.  He definitely is too tall for my desk….)  I know you will make him feel welcome as the Fitness and Program Development Director.  Stop by and introduce yourself and help him get his “sea legs” during this transition time.   I will definitely be back for the grand opening of the field house!  In the meantime, if you are in Wilmington, give me a call.  I would love to catch up with you.

It truly is “so hard to say good bye” so we will just say “Till we meet again!”

God Bless,

Susan Clayton,  (former) Wellness Director
Orange County SportsPlex

It is with great regret that I need to announce that Susan Clayton will  be leaving the Sportsplex effective April 15 2016 to join her husband, Rod,  as both  pursue exciting  new career challenges in Wilmington, NC. Susan will assume the leadership in developing and planning a new Fitness and Family Activity Center for the Cape Fear Country Club.

Susan is the only Fitness Director that the Sportsplex has ever known over its almost 21 years.  She has  been a key part of the incredible growth and diversification of the facility. As well she has been central  to the Recreation Factory Partners management team and we regard her not only as a valued team member but also as a great business colleague and friend. While will all sorely miss her, we are gratified that she has found excellent new career and life challenges and wish her and her family only the best.

Sincerely,

John
